"Dose"
The response of the human body to all drugs differs in intensity and effect according to the dose (amount) of a drug consumed. Most drugs do not show an effect until a certain minimal level of the substance is obtained. The lowest dosage of a drug to show an effect on the body is the threshold dosage of the drug. As a result of heredity, different people respond in different ways to the same dosage of a drug; therefore, the dose of a drug required to produce an effective response in 50% of all individuals tested is called the median lethal dose.
Cocaine has been consumed in various forms for thousands of years to elevate mood and enhance work performance. Two of the earliest known means of ingestion were chewing on coca leaves or mixing the leaves into a tea. Cocaine made its way to the United States in the mid-nineteenth century where chemists isolated cocaine from the coca leaf and created the powdered form of the drug know as cocaine hydrochloride. For a time, cocaine was used largely for medicinal purposes such as treatment for asthma, depression, fatigue, and as an anesthetic. During the later part of the nineteenth century, cocaine began to be used for recreational purposes and was an ingredient in several beverages, such as Coca-Cola. The first federal legislation aimed at curbing the use of cocaine in the United States began in 1914 with the Harrison Narcotic Drug Act. This act banned the non-medicinal use of the drug and within a short time the use of cocaine declined dramatically. In the 1960s, cocaine re-emerged as a heavily used recreational drug.
