Voluntary manslaughter based on "heat of passion": The most common kind of voluntary manslaughter is that in which the defendant kills while in a "heat of passion," i.e., an extremely angry or disturbed state. Normally, one who commits voluntary manslaughter intends to bring about the death of the other person. But, theoretically at least, a voluntary manslaughter conviction could be based upon an intent to do serious bodily harm, or a reckless indifference to the value of human life, assuming that such a state of mind was accompanied by the requisite "heat of passion."
